When you suspend Ubuntu computer is goes to sleep. All your applications will remain in their current state when you resume. Opened applications and documents will remain opened but other parts the computer will be switched off to save power.

While the computer is at sleep, your applications and documents will stay opened in the background while the computer is partially switched off. When the computer wakes up, it takes you back to the state where you left of.

To wake your computer from suspend mode, simply click the mouse or press a key on the keyboard. This will bring your computer from suspend mode. This brief tutorial is going to show students and new users how to setup Ubuntu to automatically go into suspend more after a period of inactivity

Some computers may have problems with hardware support which mean that they may not be able to suspend properly. It is a good idea to test suspend on your computer to see if it does work before relying on it.

You should probably still save your work before putting your computer into suspend mode.. just in case something goes wrong when you resume your computer.

Automatically Suspending Ubuntu

To automatically configure Ubuntu to go into suspend more after a period of inactivity, click the system menu at the top right corner of your screen and select System Settings.

On the System Settings panel, select Power from the list of items on the left.

Then under Suspend & Power Button, select Automatic suspend to change its settings. When you select it, a pop up pane should open where you can switch the Automatic suspend to ON.
